Fast Start Not Enough, 'Birds Fall 7-5
For the second straight night, the Aberdeen IronBirds got off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Connecticut Tigers scored three runs in the second inning off of starter Stephen Tarpley to take a 3-1 lead. Aberdeen tied the game on a long home run from Hector Veloz in the top of the third, but the Tigers scored three unanswered in the third and fourth to seize the lead once more at 6-3. Riley Palmer and Veloz struck again in the eighth, scoring on a Steve Wilkerson RBI single and a Brandon Coluccio RBI ground out, getting the IronBirds to within 6-5, but the Tigers got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and won 7-5. Tarpley was charged with the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season. He went 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs (four earned), and three walks, striking out two.
Coluccio Cracks The Hit Column
Brandon Coluccio, getting his second start of the season for the IronBirds, roped a double in the second inning for his first professional base hit. The former UMBC Golden Retriever earned his hit in his 14th at-bat of the season, playing in his 11th game of the year for the IronBirds. He also picked up his second RBI of the year on a ground out in the eighth inning, scoring Hector Veloz and getting the IronBirds to within one at 6-5 at the time.
Awesome Augey!
Augey Bill made his tenth appearance of the season last night, and his seventh out of the bullpen. He went three and a third innings, allowing just one hit, striking out three. In his last three outings, spanning 6.1 innings, he has allowed just two hits and one walk, striking out six. On the year, Bill is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 26.0 innings pitched. He has allowed 33 hits on the season and 13 runs, along with just five walks. He has not walked more than one batter in any one outing and has struck out 18 on the season.
On The Mound This Afternoon...
Two former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets square off in Connecticut this afternoon as RHP Matthew Grimes gets the start for the IronBirds while RHP Josh Heddinger will go for the Tigers. Grimes was drafted by the Orioles in the 18th round of the 2014 draft, while Heddinger was selected by the Detroit Tigers four rounds earlier in the 14th round. Grimes is 1-2 with a 4.80 ERA, while Heddinger is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA.
