State College Spikes News Release
BATAVIA, NY - The State College Spikes again took an early lead on Friday night, but the Batavia Muckdogs took advantage of the Spikes' mistakes and a pair of homers to take a 5-1 decision at Dwyer Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Spikes (31-27) remain a full game in front of Lowell for the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead.
State College took the lead in the opening frame as Thomas Spitz singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Leobaldo Pina's sacrifice fly.
However, Batavia (24-34) activated the bats after being held without a hit for the first four innings. In the sixth, Ryan Cranmer reached base on an error, and Travis Brewster followed with a bunt single. After Spikes starter Dailyn Martinez (3-4) struck out Stone Garrett, he was lifted for reliever Luke Harrison.
Brad Haynal doubled off the top of the left field wall to tie the game, though, and a errant pickoff throw to third scored Brewster to give the Muckdogs the lead. Blake Anderson then delivered another run with a single to make it 3-1, Batavia.
The Muckdogs then got solo home runs from Alex Fernandez in the seventh and Haynal in the eighth to finalize the scoring.
Jesse Jenner was the only Spike with multiple hits, and ended up with three in the game.
Martinez was charged with two runs, both unearned, on three hits and two walks in the loss. The right-hander set a new personal season high with eight strikeouts.
Batavia starter Scott Squier (5-1) got the win after yielding one run on six hits and a walk over six innings of work. Squier also struck out three batters on the night.
The Spikes and Muckdogs meet on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. for the middle game of their three-game series at Dwyer Stadium. State College will have New York-Penn League All-Star right-hander Juan Perez (4-2) on the mound, while Batavia will counter with left-hander Brett Lilek (1-2).
