Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (28-28) easily took care of the Vermont Lake Monsters (25-33) on Friday night with an 11-0 win. For Connecticut it was their second straight win and for the Lake Monsters it was there fifth straight loss.

Connecticut scored a run in the first and then broke the game open in the second inning against Vermont starter Evan Manarino (3-2). Shane Zeile led the inning off with his fourth home run of the year. That was followed by a triple off the bat of third basemen Steven Fuentes (2-4, 2 R). The next batter was leftfielder Jacob Kapstein (1-4, RBI, 2 R) and he singled Fuentes home making it 3-0.

As the inning continued first basemen Will Allen (3-4, 2 RBI) picked up an RBI single and right fielder Tanner Donnels (2-4, 3 RBI, 3B) drove in two with his first triple of the season. By the time the dust settled in the inning the Tigers had a 6-0 lead.

With Derek Beasley now on the mound the Tigers struck for four more runs in the third inning. Kapstein reached on a error to start the inning. The next two batters second basemen Pat Mackenzie (2-4, R) and shortstop Jose Zambrano singled to load the bases. Designated hitter Corey Baptist (1-4, 3 RBI, 3 R) then broke the game wide open with a bases clearing double making it 7-0. Baptist eventually scored on a base hit by Donnels.

As dominant as the Connecticut hitting was as they matched a season high in runs the pitching was just as good if not better. Tyler Alexander started the game and didn't allow a hit in three innings of work. The only base runner he allowed came in the third when he hit a batter.

Jordan Smith (1-1) was the first man out of the pen and he was nearly as good as Alexander. Smith worked three innings giving up a single hit and striking out one. Oswaldo Castillo worked the final three innings and gave up just one run on two hits. He struck out four.

Manarino started the game and lasted just an inning and two thirds on this night as he was torched for six runs on five hits. He was relieved by Derek Beasley who gave up four runs on five hits in two and a third innings.

Connecticut will play the second game of a three game series at home against Vermont on Saturday.
