Auburn Doubledays News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Doubledays fell to the Crosscutters on Friday night by the score of 3-1 in Williamsport. Auburn is now 1-6 against Williamsport this season with five games left between the two teams.
In his third professional start, Grant Borne once again struggled through in the third inning. The lefty has given up two, four, and now three runs respectively in the third inning of his three starts this season. In the bottom of the third tonight, Borne forced Carlos Duran to fly out and looked to be cruising having retired the first seven in a row. Then Austin Bossart singled on a weak grounder to third and stayed there when Dylan Bosheers flew out to right for the second out of the third. Andrew Amaro then really jumpstarted the rally with a bunt single down the third base line to put runners on first and second with two outs. Bossart scored a batter later on Mark Laird's single to right before Josh Tobias dug in and knocked in both Amaro and Laird to give the Crosscutters a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Doubledays quickly responded. Rhett Wiseman led off the frame with a single into center and moved to second when David Kerian followed him up with a walk. Melvin Rodriguez stepped in after Kerian and grounded into a double play that allowed Wiseman to advance to third with two outs. Wiseman then scored a batter later when Randy Encarnacion single to center.
The Doubledays next big opportunity came in the top of the sixth. After Max Schrock flew out to left, Kelvin Gutierrez and Wiseman hit back-to-back singles with Wiseman's single advancing Gutierrez to third. With one out and runners on the corners, Kerian struck out and Rodriguez flew out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the sixth, Matt Pirro replaced Borne on the hill. Despite the three-run third inning, Borne was impressive. The lefty retired the final 11 hitters he faced. On top of that, he faced the minimum number of hitters in four of the five innings he pitched in.
Auburn's final threat came in the seventh. With one out, Ian Sagdal reached on an error by Williamsport's shortstop Bosheers. After Jorge Tillero flew out to center for the second out, Darryl Florentino moved Sagdal over to third on a double to left. But with runners on second and third and two outs in the seventh, Max Schrock was called out on strikes.
The rest of the game went quickly and quietly as teh Doubledays fell to the Crosscutters 3-1. Grant Borne took his third loss of the season with the following line: 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, and 6 K's.
