Cutters Third Inning Offense Leads to Win
August 21, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters picked up their second straight win and sixth this season against the Auburn Doubledays on Friday night at Susquehanna Bank Park. The Cutters produced all of their offense in the bottom of the third inning to improve to 37-22 this season. The 37 wins ties a Cutters team record from the 2013 season. Williamsport holds a 5 1/2 game lead over second place State College.
The Crosscutters had a slow start against Auburn starter and southpaw Grant Borne as he would go onto retire the first seven batters to start the game. Williamsport got some momentum going in the bottom of the third inning against Borne as Austin Bossart picked up a one out single. With two outs in the inning the Cutters would get three consecutive hits to take a 3-0 lead. Mark Laird drove in his 14th run of the season and Josh Tobias would follow with a two RBI double. Tobias leads the team with 31 RBI in 47 games played.
Williamsport would shut things down defensively for Franklyn Kilome turning a pair of big double plays to keep Auburn off of the scoreboard early on. Kilome took a shutout into the fourth inning but would see the Doubledays put together a rally. A single to lead off the inning would come back to hurt Kilome as the runner would score three batters later on an RBI single to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Tobias started a 4-6-3 double play to get Kilome out of the inning with the lead.
The Cutters finished the night by receiving a scoreless three innings from their bullpen. Skylar Hunter worked the seventh inning allowing one hit while stranding a pair of runners on base. Anthony Sequeira pitched the eighth inning, striking out two batters. Rob Tasin would close the book on Auburn in the ninth inning picking up his league leading 12th save of the season. Williamsport will play the final two games of the series at Pinckney Field.
