NYPL Mahoning Valley Scrappers

Mahoning Valley drops another one

August 21, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

Kieran Lovegrove's best start of the year didn't go the way the Scrappers (26-31) had hoped for.

Lovegrove had everything going for him, but the Scrappers fell to the Black Bears 1-0 at Eastwood Field on Friday night.

Lovegrove went five innings and gave up just four hits. He did not allow a run, but walked one. He struck out four.

Friday's game was back-to-back pitcher's duals through the first half of the game. Mahoning Valley led Batavia 2-1 entering the ninth on Thursday night.

Cortland Cox (3-1) came in relief of Lovegrove. In the sixth, Cox loaded the bases. He walked Mitchell Tolman with the bases loaded to score Kevin Kramer.

That was the only run the Black Bears needed in their 1-0 win.

Mahoning Valley has now dropped two straight, and West Virginia improves its record to 3-1 against the Scrappers this season.

The Scrappers look to finish their homestand in the win column. They'll give the ball to Matt Esparza on Saturday night. Leandro Linares is expected to come in after Esparza. Esparza made 16 starts at UC Irvine in the spring and posted an 8-2 record with a 3.38 ERA.

Ohio native Jonathan Brubaker will get the ball for West Virginia. Brubaker was drafted in the 6th round this year out of the University of Akron.

First pitch is slated for 7:05.
