Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
NORWICH, CT --- Connecticut scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the first three innings and held the Lake Monsters to just one hit over the first eight innings as Vermont opened a six-game roadtrip with an 11-1 loss to the Tigers in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Dodd Stadium.
The Tigers got a run in the bottom of the first on a two-out Corey Baptist single, wild pitch and Will Allen RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Connecticut then exploded for five runs on five hits in the second inning and four runs on five hits in the third for a 10-0 advantage. Shane Zeile led off the second with his fourth home run before a Steven Fuentes triple and Jacob Kapstein RBI single made it 3-0. Allen later picked up his second RBI single to knock starter Evan Manarino from the game and Tanner Donnels greeted reliever Derek Beasley with a two-run triple for a 6-0 lead.
After a Richie Martin fielding error to start the bottom of the third, Beasley gave up five straight base hits including a three-run double to Baptist and a Donnels RBI single for a 10-run Tigers lead. Connecticut would get just one unearned run on three hits over the final six innings, coming against Heath Bowers who also struckout three in 3 1/3 innings. Dawrin Frias struckout two in a perfect eighth inning in his third appearance for Vermont.
Connecticut starter Tyler Alexander had four strikeouts and retired nine of the 10 Lake Monsters he faced, the only baserunner coming with one out in the third when he hit Steven Pallares. Vermont was held without a hit until a Trace Loehr two-out double in the sixth inning off of reliever Jordan Smith (1-1), who tossed three scoreless innings for the win. Ryan Howell led off the top of the ninth with Vermont's second hit of the night and scored the Lake Monsters only run on a two-out Brett Siddall RBI single.
Allen was 3-for-4 with the two RBI singles for Connecticut (28-28), while Donnells was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Baptist 1-for-4 with three runs scored to go along with his three-run double. Manarino (3-2) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks in just 1 2/3 innings to take the loss for the Lake Monsters, while Beasley four runs (three earned) on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. The loss was a season-high fifth straight for Vermont (25-33) and its first double-digit defeat since a 14-4 loss at Aberdeen on July 25, 2013.
The Lake Monsters and Tigers will play the second of the three-game series at Connecticut on Saturday beginning at 7:05 pm before playing the series finale on Sunday at 4:05 pm. Then after a three-game series at Lowell, Vermont will return to historic Centennial Field for a three-game homestand against the Tri-City ValleyCats August 27-29.
