Spikes' Bats Held at Bay in 8-2 Loss to Crosscutters

State College Spikes News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Williamsport Crosscutters starter David Whitehead held the State College Spikes without a hit over his six innings on the mound, and Nick Thompson's first professional home run was one of just two hits for the Spikes in an 8-2 loss to the Crosscutters on Sunday night at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field.

Thompson's homer, a two-run shot down the left field line, thwarted Williamsport's (1-2) shutout bid in the ninth inning. The William & Mary product has now driven in at least one run in each of State College's (2-1) first three games.

Whitehead (1-0) struck out five and recorded 14 consecutive outs to finish off his outing for the Crosscutters. The right-hander allowed only two baserunners during his time on the hill, both via walks. Whitehead, the 34th-round draft choice of the Phillies in 2013, did not see any professional action last season due to undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Rowan Wick halted Williamsport's bid for a combined no-hitter in the seventh with a single to left field off of reliever Frank Rivas.

Williamsport opened the scoring in the fourth with a pair of runs, and then widened the margin with six more in the sixth inning. Jiandido Tromp keyed the surge with a two-run base hit, while Cord Sandberg and Malquin Canelo each delivered RBI singles as well.

Sandberg and Wilmer Oberto each produced two hits for the Crosscutters, with Oberto adding a double.

Ian McKinney (0-1) took the loss for the Spikes, allowing two runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman. McKinney's five strikeouts were the most for a Spikes pitcher in any of the first three games of the year.

Two of the St. Louis Cardinals' 2014 draft picks, catcher Brian O'Keefe and center fielder Collin Radack, made their first professional starts for the Spikes in the game.

Monday, the Spikes and Crosscutters finish their season-opening four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Dailyn Martinez (0-0) gets the ball for State College, while Williamsport will send right-hander Feliberto Sanchez (0-0) to the mound.
