Jamestown Jammers News Release
Jamestown, NY - Coming off an extremely close loss on Opening Night, the Jamestown Jammers, and Taylor Gushue came out swinging in the second game of the year. Sparked by Gushue's 2-run home run in the first inning, and fine pitching from Marek Minarik, Andres Mendoza, and Oderman Rocha, the Jammers picked up their first win of the 2014 season, 4-1 against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
First basemen Kevin Ross, and third basemen Ulises Montilla picked up the other two RBIs for the Jammers. Ross connected on a double in the bottom of the fifth, which scored Michael Suchy, who tripled the batter before. Montilla picked up his RBI on a groundout in the bottom of the eighth, which scored Tyler Filliben, who singled earlier in the inning.
Starting pitcher, Marek Minarik, worked four scoreless innings, while only giving up one hit, and striking out three. He was relieved in the top of the fifth by Andres Mendoza. Mendoza tossed three innings, gave up four hits, only surrendered one run, and picked up the win. Oderman Rocha got the save after shutting the Scrappers down in order in each of the final two innings.
Mahoning Valley picked up their only run in the top of the sixth on an infield single by Yonathan Mendoza, which scored Juan De La Cruz, who doubled in the inning as well. Joel Mejia, Drake Roberts, and Francisco Mejia picked up the other hits for the Scrappers.
Game three of the four game series will take place Sunday afternoon at 4:05pm. On the mound for the Jammers will be Tyler Eppler, the Pirates 6th round pick in the 2014 Draft out of Sam Houston State. He will be opposed by Kieran Lovegrove, a 3rd round pick of the Cleveland Indians in 2012. Come celebrate Father's Day at Diethrick Park, as the Jammers will have a bunch of fun activities for all the dads and their kids to enjoy as a part of the Jammers Father's Day Bash.
