Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY- One day after coming out on top in a 3-2 victory during Opening Night at "The Joe," the Tri-City ValleyCats fell 9-3 to the visiting Connecticut Tigers in the second game of the 2014 season.

'Cats starting pitcher Joe Musgrove retired the first four batters he faced, but ran into trouble in the second inning when Tigers catcher Franklin Navarro hit a one out single into centerfield, and the throw back in was mishandled by Tri-City catcher Alfredo Gonzalez. The defensive miscue, one of seven by the ValleyCats in the game, caused Tigers left fielder Kasey Coffman to score all the way from first base.

The Tigers tacked on one more run in the second inning before Adam Nelubowich, the ValleyCats left fielder, hit a two-out two-RBI double later on in the frame. Unfortunately, those two runs were the only scoring done by the 'Cats until the bottom of the 8th inning, when Alex Hernandez, a 40th round draft pick by the Astros in last week's draft, hit a two-RBI double of his own in what was his first professional at bat. But by then, the Tigers had already scored nine runs, ultimately prevailing 9-3.

Musgrove, who lasted 3.2 innings for Tri-City, got charged with the loss (0-1) in his season debut, while Tigers reliever Johan Belisario (1-0) earned the win for Connecticut, pitching two innings of scoreless relief.

The Tigers and ValleyCats conclude this three-game season opening series tomorrow at 5pm, as 'Cats LHP Blaine Sims takes the bump opposite Tigers RHP Tanner Bailey. It's Father's Day at "The Joe," presented by SEFCU, and prior to the game, the 'Cats are hosting a Father's Day Fan Fest, beginning with brunch at 11:30am .

The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a 2013 ValleyCats championship poster.
