Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Wappingers Falls, NY (6/15/2014)- The Hudson Valley Renegades improved to 3-0 in 2014, with their 4-2 victory against the IronBirds on Father's Day . With all the pre-game attention focused on O's top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy, it was 'Gades starter Nolan Gannon who stood out, tossing five scoreless innings while surrendering just one hit. He earned the win while Bundy received the loss, as the Hudson Valley offense touched up the Aberdeen pitching staff for 4 runs on 9 hits.
2014 first-round draft pick Casey Gillaspie excited the crowd as he homered with a runner on in the bottom of the sixth, giving his team the 4-0 lead. His shot sailed over the high wall in right field, as it took the Wichita State product just two games to record his first homer. One half inning later, he made a diving stop at first base and flipped to his pitcher Mario Fernandez at the bag, to end all threats in the top of the seventh inning.
At the plate, Douglas Duran doubled twice and singled in his final trip to the dish, he finished 3-3 after getting the start at second base, and in the nine spot of the order. He was one of three players to record multi-hit games in the victory, as David Garcia was 2-3 and Elias Torres was 2-4.
Once again, the bullpen was able to impress as they followed along the same pattern of their starter. Mario Fernandez and Anthony Tzamtzis teamed up for the game's final four innings, as they were able to hold strong for the victory.
Fernandez went three innings without allowing a run, with two hits and two strikeouts. Tzamtizis prevailed in the top of the ninth with a gutsy performance, getting Sam Kimmel to fly out to left field with two IronBirds on base. Aberdeen was able to get two runs across in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Clayton Henning tracked down the fly-ball for the game's final out.
Notes: Hudson Valley swept Aberdeen on the road to begin the 2013 season, and they are one win away from taking four straight against them to start out 2014. There has been at least one three-hit performance for the Renegades in each of their first three contests, as Douglas Duran kept that going on Sunday. He joins Hunter Lockwood and Coty Blanchard on the list of players to record three base knocks this season.
The fourth and final game of the series is set for Monday evening at 6:05. The Renegades will have LHP Oscar Armenta on the hill to take on Aberdeen lefty Augey Bill. Monday is "Sweet as Pie" nigh at the ballpark, sponsored by The New York Blood Center. Join us at Dutchess Stadium as Hudson Valley attempts to make it four straight wins to begin the season. Great seats are still available. Call 845-838-0094, or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
