Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally for a 6-4 victory over the Lowell Spinners on Sunday afternoon and take two of the three games in the season-opening New York-Penn League series at LeLecheur Park.

Vermont had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a Yairo Munoz two-out RBI single scoring Gabriel Santana, who had earlier reached on a one-out single. The Spinners used some wildness from Lake Monsters reliever Dominique Vattuone in the bottom of the seventh to retake a 4-3 lead. After getting the first out of the inning, Vattuone walked the next two batters and gave up a single to load the bases before forcing home the tying run with another walk.

Alex Nolasco relieved Vattuone and allowed a go ahead sacrifice fly and walked the fourth Lowell batter of the inning to reload the bases, but got out of further damage with a flyout to end the inning. The Lake Monsters then took advantage of Lowell wildness in the eighth as Kyle Wheeler led off with a walk, moved to second on a one-out Justin Higley single, advanced to third on a walk to Santana and scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

After a walk to Chris Wolfe reloaded the bases, Ben McQuown picked up his first hit of the season with an RBI single to right scoring Higley with the go ahead run and Munoz followed with a sacrifice fly to score Santana with the Lake Monsters sixth run of the game. Vermont reliever Trevor Bayless scattered three base hits with three strikeouts over the final two innings to earn his first save of the season.

Wolfe was 2-for-2 with two walks, a double and an RBI in his first appearance of the season for Vermont, while Munoz was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Higley 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Starter Jerad Grundy allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts over the first six innings in the no-decision. Over the first three games, Vermont starting pitchers have 0 walks and 20 strikeouts in 16 innings of work.

Nick Longhi was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Lowell (1-2), while Jordan Betts added a solo home run in his second professional at bat in the fourth inning. Starter Jake Drehoff allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts over five innings, while German Tavaras (0-1) was charged with three runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts over the final 2 1/3 innings to take the loss.

With its second straight win over the Spinners, Vermont is now 2-1 overall for the fourth time in the last five years to start the season (the 2013 Lake Monsters lost their first three games at Tri-City). Vermont now returns to historic Centennial Field for the 2014 home opener vs. the Connecticut Tigers on Monday night beginning at 7:05 pm. It is Pepsi Opening Night with a free Lake Monsters magnetic schedule for the first 3,500 fans and plenty of opening night pre-game festivities.
