Bridgeport Islanders News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Ryan Martindale scored on a power play in overtime, as the Syracuse Crunch outlasted the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-3 on Friday night at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena.

Syracuse got their seventh power play of the game two minutes into the extra frame. Then Martindale pinballed a shot off a Sound Tiger stick and into the back of the net for the winner.

The Crunch got onto the board just 57 seconds into the game. Sound Tigers netminder C.J. Motte went behind the net to play the puck, but lost control of it. Jonathan Marchessault found the biscuit and deposited his shot into the empty net to make it 1-0 Syracuse.

Bridgeport earned a power play right after the midway point of the first frame, as Cody Kunyk went off for high-sticking. Just 10 seconds later, Ryan Pulock blasted a slap shot from the point that bounced off Kristers Gudlevskis pads and right to Alan Quine. The forward wristed the puck into the cage for his 21 st of the season and tied the game up going into the first intermission.

Although Syracuse outshot Bridgeport 16-11 in the second period, it was the Sound Tigers coming away with the two-goal lead. First it was Chris Langkow, who found the rebound of a Dustin Jeffrey shot and potted a wrister over the glove of Gudlevskis to make it 2-1. Langkow's first goal in 19 games was his eighth of the season, assisted by Jeffrey and Quine.

Then it was a brilliant shift by the Sound Tigers' third line of Colton Gillies, Johan Sundstrom and Carson McMillan who got the job done. After a minute of offensive zone time and cycling the puck down low, Gillies walked in front of the net and was stopped by Gudlevskis. The winger stayed with the play, getting his own rebound and roofing a backhander into the Syracuse net to make it 3-1.

Syracuse responded with another goal early in a period, this time at the start of the third. Marchessault found Cody Kunyk in front and he finished off his 10 th goal of the year to make it a 3-2 game just 26 into the closing stanza.

After a pair of tripping calls against the Sound Tigers, Syracuse found themselves on a 5-on-3 power play for 47 seconds. They made the most of their opportunity, as Marchessault set up another goal, this time getting it to Brayden Point, who scored his first professional goal to tie the game at three.

Both teams traded chances in the third, but neither could find the back of the net. That set the stage for an overtime power play for Syracuse and the tally by Martindale to win it.

Motte made 34 saves in a losing effort, while Gudlevskis made 21 for the win. Syracuse's power play finished 2-for-7 as Bridgeport went 1-for-3.

The Sound Tigers return home for Pucks & Paws Night tomorrow at Webster Bank Arena against the Manchester Monarchs. Fans are encouraged to bring their dog to the game at no extra cost. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.

Notes: Final shots were 38-24 Syracuse...Marchessault factored on all four goals for Syracuse...This is not the final trip to Syracuse for the Sound Tigers, as they travel upstate one more time on Saturday, April 18 for a 7:00 p.m. game before coming home for the season finale the next day at 3:00 p.m.
