Spann Outstanding in 6-2 Loss to Trenton

The Senators took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday night but couldn't hold it in falling to Trenton 6-2. The Senators fell to 22-32 while Trenton improved to 32-24 with the win.

Matthew Spann started for the Senators after being promoted to Harrisburg, taking the place of Joe Ross who started for the Nationals earlier on Saturday. Spann worked eight solid innings allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out six. He threw 100 pitches, 63 strikes.

The Senators took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Derrick Robinson, scoring Adrian Sanchez, who had doubled. Kevin Keyes homered to give the Senators a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

Trenton scored an unearned run on a throwing error to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Spann then took over, allowing just a single hit over his final three innings of work. He finished by striking out three of the final seven batters he faced. He also induced two groundball double plays. Trenton scored five runs in the eighth, with the final three coming on a home run by Gary Sanchez off Brian Dupra.
