Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Joe Gunkel worked six scoreless innings against his former team and the Bowie Baysox (30-25) shut out the Sea Dogs (23-33) 1-0 in front of a crowd of 6,627 on Saturday night at Hadlock Field.
Just three days after he was traded from the Red Sox to the Orioles, Gunkel (W, 3-1) was back on the mound at Hadlock Field and allowed just five hits while issuing no walks and striking out three against his former team. Mikey O'Brien followed up with two hitless innings of relief, and Marcel Prado closed the door with a perfect ninth to record his first save of the season. The game was played in a brisk two hours and six minutes - the second shortest nine-inning game of the season for Portland (2:05 May 1 @ Reading).
The lone run of the game scored in the top of the first inning. After a one out single by Ozzie Martinez (2-4, R), Mike Yastrzemski (1-3, BB) walked and Sean Halton (0-4) grounded into a fielder's choice to advance Martinez to third. Rossmel Perez (1-4, RBI) singled and gave Bowie the 1-0 lead they would never relinquish.
Making his Double-A debut and his first appearance of 2015, Heri Quevedo (L, 0-1) went five innings for Portland and allowed just one earned run on four hits, walking one and striking out two. Mike McCarthy and Pat Light combined for four scoreless innings of relief - the Sea Dogs' bullpen has now worked 24 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
The series concludes tomorrow afternoon, first pitch comes at 1:00 PM. William Cuevas (6-2, 3.02) gets the start for the Sea Dogs, while former Sea Dog Terry Doyle (4-1, 3.20) takes the mound for the Baysox. Pregame coverage begins live on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network at 12:40 PM. Major League Lacrosse star Greg Gurenlian will be at Hadlock Field as the Sea Dogs celebrate Lacrosse Day. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Sea Dogs ticket office at Hadlock Field, by phone at 207-879-9500, or online at seadogs.com.
