Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets were shut out for the second time this season in their 3-0 loss against the Reading Fightin Phils Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. Three Reading pitchers combined to hold the B-Mets to four hits, while Cameron Perkins drove in all three runs and threw a runner out at the plate.
Perkins began the scoring against Robert Gsellman in the top of the first inning. The righty allowed back-to-back singles to open the ballgame. With one out, he walked Brock Stassi to load the bases in front of Perkins. Perkins grounded out to shortstop, allowing Roman Quinn to score his league-leading 38th run.
Perkins later put an end to Binghamton's best scoring opportunity of the night in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and two on, Gilbert Gomez lined a single to left field. Xorge Carrillo hustled home, attempting to score from second, when he was cut down by a Perkins throw that beat him to the plate by a few feet. It was Perkins' league-leading 10th outfield assist of the season.
The B-Mets would go in order in the next two innings. In the fifth, Jared king flied to center field to strand the tying runs in scoring position. It'd be the final batter Reading starter Rainier Roibal would face.
Adam Loewen was the first man out of Readings bullpen and retired the final eight batters he faced, after issuing a one-out walk in the sixth.
Bobby Parnell pitched the ninth inning, working in back-to-back games, and was greeted by Perkins who took him deep beyond the left field fence for his eighth home run of the season. Parnell has now allowed an earned run in four of his last five appearances, while Perkins has driven in nine runs over his last eight games.
Binghamton got a lead-off single from Michael Conforto in the last of the ninth, before Stephen Shackleford struck out the next three batters he faced to close out the 3-0 Reading victory.
Roibal (2-1) got the win in his second start of the year, tossing five shutout innings. Gsellman (0-2) has lost each of his first two Double-A starts, allowing two earned runs in six innings. Shackleford earned his 12th save of the year.
The B-Mets (27-28) wrap up their series with Reading Sunday afternoon, with a 1:05 PM first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Seth Lugo (2-2, 2.82) gets the start for Binghamton, against LHP Tom Windle (1-3, 4.44). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
