South Bay Lakers News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - The South Bay Lakers won a tough game against the Memphis Hustle, 96-94, on Saturday night. Johnathan Williams tallied his sixth double-double of the season for the Lakers (5-7) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Markel Crawford led Memphis (5-5) with 23 points.
South Bay jumped out to a 21-18 lead after the first quarter as Isaac Bonga recorded nine points and five rebounds. The Lakers maintained a slight lead at halftime, 45-43, as Bonga and Travis Wear combined for 12 points in the frame. While the Lakers didn't hit any triples in the first half, they held the Hustle an opponent-low 43 points.
Memphis took the lead after three, 76-69, as Dusty Hannahs poured in 10 points in the quarter. Jemerrio Jones tallied seven points in the third to keep the Lakers close. The two teams stayed competitive throughout the fourth quarter as Williams scored 14 of his points in the final period. A free throw by Wear put South Bay up 94-92 with 27 seconds remaining, but Jevon Carter hit a running jumper with eight seconds to tie it up. However, Alex Caruso went coast-to-coast and banked in a runner to give the Lakers the go-ahead bucket with two seconds remaining. The Hustle had a shot to win, but South Bay's defense prevailed.
Crawford's 23 points led Memphis while Hannahs added 20 of his own off the bench. Kyle Casey finished with 12 points and nine rebounds as Carter also tallied double digits with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Williams dominated the fourth quarter en route to his double-double as Bonga finished the game with 20 points and nine rebounds. Wear recorded 18 points off the bench, joined by double-digit scorers Caruso (11 points) and Demarcus Holland (14 points). Jones continued to control the glass with nine points, 13 rebounds, five assists, one steal and three blocks.
The South Bay Lakers will continue their road trip with a visit to the Windy City Bulls on Monday, December 3 at 5:00pm PT from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, IL.
