Stars Fall to Spurs

AUSTIN, Tex. - The Salt Lake City Stars, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, fell to the Austin Spurs 113-104 tonight, completing their two-game Texas road swing. The Stars will return to Salt Lake City to host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. (MT) at Bruin Arena.

The Stars (5-6) were led by Utah Jazz two-way player Naz Mitrou-Long, who finished with 19 points and three assists. Willie Reed recorded 18 points and eight boards, while Tony Bradley, currently on assignment from the Utah Jazz, tallied 11 points and eight rebounds. Jairus Lyles led all Stars reserves for the second consecutive game, finishing with 17 points off the bench (13 in the fourth quarter), and Isaiah Cousins finished with 16 points, his seventh double-digit scoring effort of the season, and a team-high five assists.

The Spurs (6-5) featured three 20-point scorers, led by John Holland, who finished with a game-high 28 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals. Nick Johnson, the 2018 NBA G League Finals MVP, recorded 27 points and a game-high seven assists, and Jeff Ledbetter scored 27 points off the bench (18 in the first half) on 6-of-8 (.750) from three-point range. San Antonio Spurs two-way player Ben Moore tallied the game's lone double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Chimezie Metu, who was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round (49th overall) of the 2018 NBA Draft and is currently on assignment from San Antonio, recorded eight points and three boards in 30 minutes.

The Stars built a six-point advantage in the first quarter, but Austin took the lead on a 9-0 run later in the frame, ending the first with a seven-point edge (33-26) behind Ledbetter's 11 first quarter points. The game remained close and Salt Lake City regained the lead midway through the third quarter, but the Spurs responded and owned a 10-point advantage (85-75) with 48.0 seconds left in the frame. The Stars rattled off a quick 5-0 run, highlighted by a Deonte Burton three-pointer with 1.1 seconds left, to cut the Spurs' advantage to five (85-80) entering the final quarter of play. The Stars trimmed the Spurs' lead to four points (108-104) with 1:35 remaining, but the Spurs ended the game with five-straight points to earn the nine-point win.

The Stars forced 20 Austin turnovers compared to 12 Salt Lake City miscues. The Stars held the advantage in steals (11-5), points in the paint (64-38) and second chance points (13-0). The Spurs outshot Salt Lake City from the field (.533-.462) and from three-point range (.583-.250) while collecting more rebounds (39-34) and dishing out more assists (18-15).

The Stars will return home to face the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (Houston Rockets affiliate) on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. (MT) at Bruin Arena.
