Santa Cruz Warriors Comeback Attempt Falls Short against Texas Legends Tonight, 104-102

SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (8-2) took a late fourth quarter but ultimately fell to the Texas Legends 102-104, suffering back-to-back losses after winning eight straight to start the 2018-19 season.

Golden State Warriors two-way forward Marcus Derrickson scored a game-high 22 points and a team-high 11 rebounds to collect his first double-double of the season. Guard Kendrick Nunn finished with 21 points on 8-of-15 from the field, including four-of-seven from behind the arc, to go with four assists.

The Legends were led by Dallas Mavericks two-way guard Daryl Macon, who scored 22 points on 8-of-13 from the field, including the two game-winning free throws with 8.7 seconds remaining. Center Jameel Warney chipped in 21 points and five rebounds, and forward Ray Spalding, currently on assignment from the Mavericks, logged 10 points and 11 rebounds for the team's only double-double.

Derrickson tipped-off the game with eight of the team's first 11 points en route to his best single-half of the season with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field (3-of-5 from three). Meanwhile, Warney and Macon paced the Legends with 13 and 12 points apiece, including 15 of the team's 17 points to end the first half with a 56-49 advantage.

Nunn carried the team's scoring load in the second half with 16 total points to keep the score close, after three quarters, 83-79. The Warriors went on a 9-0 run in the final minutes to take their first lead since the first quarter, 98-97, sparked by two Nunn threes and a Darius Morris and-1 layup.

Morris, Warney and Spalding traded baskets before a thunderous dunk by Nunn tied the game at 102 apiece with one minute remaining in the game. Despite Santa Cruz's 19-11 run to end the game, Macon's two foul shots sent the Legends to victory.

The Warriors will play the second round of the home back to-back set against the Legends tomorrow night, December 1. The team will host Plantronics jersey night, with canned food and all cash donation at the door and for a postgame jersey auction benefitting the Second Harvest Food Bank's Holiday Food and Fund Drive. The first 1,000 fans to arrive at Kaiser Permanente Arena Friday night will also receive a Warriors rally towel, courtesy of Plantronics.
