Stars' 40-Point Fourth Quarter Seals Victory at Vipers

EDINBURG, Tex. - The Salt Lake City Stars, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, used a 40-point fourth quarter to earn a 119-114 road victory at the Rio Grande Valley Vipers tonight. The Stars, who trailed by as many as 20 points in the fourth frame, ended the game on a 17-0 run to seal the win.

The Stars (5-5) were led by Jairus Lyles, who scored an NBA G League career-high 29 points off the bench, including 18 points in the fourth quarter. Lyles' 18 points in the fourth are the most scored in any quarter by a Stars player this season and the most scored in any quarter by a Stars/Idaho Stampede player off the bench in franchise history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Lyles added a career-high seven rebounds, while Tony Bradley, currently on assignment from the Utah Jazz, recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Willie Reed, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2018 NBA G League Draft, tallied his sixth double-double of the 2018-19 campaign with 18 points and a season-high-tying 17 rebounds. Utah Jazz two-way player Naz Mitrou-Long also scored 18 points to go with a team-high five assists and a game-high-tying three steals.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Vipers (6-5), led by Michael Frazier, who recorded 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Brandon Knight, the eighth overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft on assignment from the Houston Rockets, finished with 16 points and five assists in 22 minutes. Houston Rockets two-way player Vincent Edwards scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Brandon Sampson recorded 19 points. Former University of Utah swingman Dakarai Tucker scored 13 points in 30 minutes off the bench, and Tim Bond finished with game-highs of eight rebounds and seven assists.

The Stars jumped out to a 20-point lead in the first quarter, holding a 38-18 advantage over the Vipers at the end of the opening frame. Salt Lake City extended its lead to 27 points (45-18) with 10:35 remaining in the second quarter, but Rio Grande Valley ended the first half on a 10-2 run and entered intermission trailing by 11 (61-50). The Vipers took a 66-65 lead off a Brandon Knight three-pointer with 7:17 left in the third quarter and extended their advantage to as many as 20 points (101-81) with 8:45 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Stars chipped away in the ensuing minutes and trailed by 12 points (114-102) with 3:56 left, holding the Vipers scoreless for the rest of the game to end the contest on a 17-0 run and earn the five-point victory. Salt Lake City outscored Rio Grande Valley 40-27 in the fourth quarter, marking the Stars' third 40-point frame of the season.

The Stars outrebounded the Vipers (54-35), hit more free throws (28-9), committed fewer turnovers (11-14) and scored more points in the paint (68-40) and second chance points (29-10). Rio Grande Valley outshot Salt Lake City from the field (.472-.452) and from three-point range (.412-.250) while dishing out more assists (31-19).

Salt Lake City will travel to Austin to complete its first back-to-back set of the season tomorrow night at the Spurs (San Antonio Spurs affiliate). The game, which tips off at 6 p.m. (MT), will be broadcast on Facebook Live and can be accessed via the Salt Lake City Stars Facebook page.
