Sounders FC Loans Midfielder Shandon Hopeau to San Antonio FC

April 15, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Seattle Sounders FC News Release

SEATTLE, WASH. - Sounders FC today announced that it has loaned midfielder Shandon Hopeau to USL Championship side San Antonio FC for the 2021 campaign. Hopeau, a Sounders FC Academy and Tacoma Defiance product, has 80 career appearances for Tacoma and eight for Sounders FC.

"Shandon is a talented young player who has been in our development system for a number of years now," said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. "Loaning him to San Antonio allows him better opportunity for meaningful playing time in a different environment, and we look forward to seeing how he performs this season."

Hopeau, 22, signed a First Team contract in June of 2020, making six appearances and one start in MLS play. The Hawaii native previously spent five years with the Academy and Defiance, recording 80 USL Championship appearances and eight goals, including five goals and four assists in 2019. He previously made his MLS debut on September 7, 2019 at Colorado, logging 32 minutes as a substitute after agreeing to a Short-Term Agreement after Sounders FC qualified for Extreme Hardship (when a club has less than 14 outfield players or has fewer than two goalkeepers available). Hopeau joined the Sounders FC Academy in 2016 after playing for his local club, Hawaii Rush, and was a key attacking piece of the U-17/18 squad that finished third in the USSDA National Playoffs.

Sounders FC begins its 13th campaign in Major League Soccer this Friday, April 16 against Minnesota United FC at Lumen Field (6:30 p.m. PT / FS1). The season-opening matchup pits the two defending Western Conference finalists against each other, after the Rave Green earned a 3-2 comeback win in last year's conference championship fixture.
