Sound Tigers win fourth consecutive game behind Regier's two-goal night
February 17, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Steve Regier's two goals in the opening minutes of the game set the tone for the Sound Tigers' 4-1 victory over in-state rival, the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Sound Tigers' winning streak now stands at four games after a perfect showing this weekend with a 3-0 mark with wins over Albany, Wilke-Barre/Scranton and now Hartford.
After a two point effort last night, Regier scored the game's opening goal just 1:37 into the first period while the Sound Tigers were on a two-man advantage. Kyle Okposo started the play by passing the puck to Tim Jackman waiting at the far goal line. Jackman fed the puck over several Wolf Pack sticks to Regier at the back-door, who slammed home his 15th goal of the season by beating Hartford starting goalie Miika Wiikman on the far post.
Just shy of two minutes later, Regier found the back of the net again for the 2-0 lead. He picked up a loose puck in the right corner that bounced over the stick of a Wolf Pack defender and snapped a wrist shot through the arm of Wiikman and inside the far post. The unassisted goal gave Regier the team lead in goals with 16, passing teammate Ben Walter's 15 tallies this season.
The Sound Tigers made it 3-0 on Sean Bentivoglio's seventh goal of the season and second in as many days, 16:13 into the opening frame. Okposo passed the puck to Trevor Smith at the top of the right circle and moved in on a two-on-one with Bentivoglio. Smith held the puck long enough to draw the defensemen over, leaving Bentivoglio open at the far post. Bentivoglio received the pass at the back post for the pretty tap in goal. Okposo's had the second assist, giving him consecutive multi-point games.
The Wolf Pack cut the lead to two on a broken play in front of Joey MacDonald. Dane Byers knocked in a loose puck from below the circles after a Pierre Parenteau centering-pass was deflected enough to catch MacDonald off guard and unable to stretch his left padfar enough to make the save. Greg Moore also credited with an assist.
Smith scored his seventh of the season to make it 4-1 halfway through the third. Justin Bourne fed Smith a pass at the half-boards that the North Vancouver native took while driving the net. Smith dropped his shoulder and snapped the puck over the pad of Wiikman to close out the scoring.
Hartford almost made it a two-goal game again on a Parenteau slap-shot from the half-boards that MacDonald kicked into the slot, right to the stick of Moore, who fired a quick wrister on net. MacDonald was able to move to his right and get square to the shot, squeezing the puck between his pads.
The Sound Tigers' stifling penalty kill held the Wolf Pack scoreless on six chances. MacDonald stopped 32 shots en route to his 11th win of the season, while Wiikman stopped just 14 of 18 shots in the loss.
The team returns to action Wednesday when they take on the Norfolk Admirals at Arena at Harbor Yard at 7:30.
