Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn (Dec. 18, 2010) ¬" Seven different Sound Tigers recorded two points led by Micheal Haley's two-goal performance as Bridgeport defeated the Worcester Sharks 7-2 at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Saturday night. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 14-13-1-2 overall. Worcester drops to 15-9-2-4.
The Sound Tigers grabbed the lead just 1:33 into the game as forward Micheal Haley continued his impressive play against Worcester this season. Sharks goaltender Carter Hutton misplayed a dump-in attempt towards his net and Tomas Marcinko found the puck by the right circle. Marcinko slid the puck to Haley who fired from the slot past Hutton for his fifth goal of the season and fourth against Worcester to give the Sound Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Rob Hisey increased the Sound Tigers lead to 2-0 just 2:33 later. Brandon Svendsen collected the loose puck by the Worcester blue line as the Sound Tigers rushed into the zone. Svendsen waited until Hisey joined the play, then fired the puck cross-ice to Hisey who sent the puck past Hutton. It was Hisey's fourth goal of the season and the Sound Tigers had a two-goal lead just 4:06 into the game. Worcester would cut the deficit in half courtesy of its newest teammate. David Marshall, who had signed a PTO with the Sharks earlier on Saturday, fired from the right circle past Kevin Poulin to make the score 2-1 at 15:28 of the opening period.
Worcester tied the game just 1:19 into the second period as the Sharks were given an early Christmas present. Poulin came out of his net to play the puck as it flew around the boards, but took a strange bounce off the glass right into the slot. T.J. Trevelyan put the puck into the open net to tie the score 2-2. However the Sound Tigers retook the lead with just under seven minutes left in the second period. Robin Figren kept the puck in the Worcester zone as the Sound Tigers maintained pressure and skated the puck behind the net. His wraparound attempt was stopped but Haley found the rebound and buried it for his second of the game to give the Sound Tigers a 3-2 lead. Dylan Reese scored his second goal of the season at 16:48 of the period on the power play and the Sound Tigers lead 4-2 heading to the third.
The Sound Tigers poured it on in the final frame with three goals to pull away. Josh Bailey notched his sixth of the season off a gorgeous cross-ice pass from Anton Klementyev 7:30 into the period. David Ullstrom followed just 51 seconds later with a deflection off Dustin Friesen's shot from the point to increase the lead to four. Tony Romano rounded out the scoring on the power play with his fifth goal of the season at 16:41, and the Sound Tigers came away with a convincing 7-2 win.
Kevin Poulin made 28 saves to improve his record to 8-3-0. Hutton made 23 saves in the losing effort for Worcester.
Rhett Rakhshani had two assists to extend his point-scoring streak to six games and continues to lead all AHL rookies in points with 28 (10 goals, 18 assists). Josh Bailey's goal extends his point-scoring streak to seven games (six goals, six assists). Five players recorded two assists for the Sound Tigers. The seven goals are a season-high for the Sound Tigers and their highest output since a 7-3 win on Dec. 5, 2009 against Springfield.
The Sound Tigers close out their weekend homestand tomorrow afternoon when they host the Portland Pirates at 3:00 p.m. Tomorrow is the Sound Tigers Annual Teddy Bear Toss and fans are encouraged to bring a brand new stuffed animal to the game. After the Sound Tigers score their first goal, fans can throw their teddy bears onto the ice which will be given by Sound Tigers players to children at local area hospitals.
