PORTLAND, ME - Justin Azevedo scored 58 seconds into overtime to lift the Manchester Monarchs to a 2-1 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 4,477 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Thomas Hickey netted the other goal for the Monarchs, who posted their second straight win against the Pirates to move to 19-11-1-1 on the season.
Marc-Andre Gragnani scored the lone goal for the Pirates, now 17-9-2-1.
The two teams played through a scoreless opening period. Gragnani broke the stalemate midway through the second to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead heading into the third. Hickey scored shorthanded eight minutes into the third to tie the game and force overtime and set the stage for Azevedo.
The Monarchs out shot the Pirates 44-37 in the game as Jhonas Enroth took the loss.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were 1. Azevedo, 2. Hickey and 3. Gragnani.
The Pirates complete weekend action tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon when they travel to Bridgeport for a 3 p.m. game against the Sound Tigers. The game can be heard live on 95.5 News Talk WLOB and on portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 2:45 p.m.
The next Pirates home game takes place Tuesday, December 28th at 6:30 p.m. when the Providence Bruins visit the Cumberland County Civic Center. The first 2,500 fans into the game receive a rally towel courtesy of MetLife Home and Auto and Snoopy will be in attendance to pose for picture with the children.
