Albany Devils News Release

NORFOLK, VA - The Albany Devils couldn't complete the weekend sweep as they lost to the Norfolk Admirals, 5-1, Saturday night at the Norfolk Scope Arena. Albany's Michael Swift scored for the second straight night, but Norfolk sustained pressure throughout to improve to 18-6-5-1 and remain in second place in the East Division. Albany, which won 4-3 in OT the night before, goes to 12-17-0-0 with the setback.

Swift, who has tallied eight goals this season and five in nine games, found the back of the net at 8:07 of the second period as the Devils trailed 3-0. Kory Nagy carried the puck into the offensive end, pulled up and found a streaking Swift cutting to the net. Once he received the pass, Swift snapped a wrist shot high into the upper left corner.

The goal seemed to spark the Devils, who were outshot 20-5 and had to kill four penalties in the opening period. However, despite registering 14 shots in the second, Albany trailed by four heading into the third period due to goal by James Wright and Pierre-Cedric Labrie.

Wright answered Swift's goal with his second of the night at 15:59 and Labrie made it 5-1 at 18:57. Wright's goal came while on the power play and Labrie's was shorthanded.

Norfolk had established a 3-0 lead in a first period that resembled the first 20 minutes of the evening before. Matt Fomataro struck first with a deflection goal at 6:38 on the power play and Mark Barberio followed with a wrist shot in the slot at 11:11. Wright concluded the first period scoring with a shorthanded goal at 16:30.

Mike McKenna suffered the loss with 42 saves on 47 shots, while Cedrick Desjardins earned the victory with 26 stops on 27 tries.

Albany's power-play was shutout, 0-for-5, while Norfolk went 2-for-6 and added a pair of shorthanded tallies.

The Devils return to the ice after the Holiday with a 5:05 p.m. contest against East-Division leader Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday, Dec. 26. The Times Union Center reopens its doors on Tuesday, Dec. 28 for a 7 p.m. outing as Bridgeport comes to Albany. Fans can attend that event for just $10.
