TONIGHT: The San Antonio Rampage visit the Cox Convention Center for the third of 10 meetings in the season series. The Rampage, top affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes, have won the previous games 4-1 and 6-3 with both being at the Cox Center. The Rampage, like the Barons, were shut out 3-0 last night. Texas blanked the Rampage in San Antonio with Richard Bachman making 41 saves for the Stars, while Hamilton made its only visit to OKC with a 29-save effort by Curtis Sanford. The Rampage lead the West by 2 points over Peoria. OKC is tied for fourth, 5 points back.
PK REMAINS NO. 1: Despite allowing a pair of Hamilton power play goals in 6 attempts last night, the Barons maintain the AHL's top penalty killing percentage at 88.9. They had killed Since allowing a season-high 3 power play goals at Lake Erie Nov. 27, the Barons have successfully killed 41 of their last 45 times short spanning 7 games, a 91.1 percent rate.
MORE SPECIAL TEAMS TALK: After going 0-for-8 on power play against Hamilton last night, OKC enters tonight's game having not scored a power play goal in its last 4 games, a combined 0-for-21 in that span. The Barons' last power play goal was scored by Alexandre Giroux Dec. 7 vs. Houston. OKC had one unsuccessful power play chance following Giroux's goal that night, so the complete streak is 22 straight man advantages without scoring dating to Dec. 7. OKC has had the most power chances in the AHL so far with 170.
GIROUX APPROACHES MILESTONE: Alexandre Giroux enters tonight's game one point away from 600 for his AHL career, a plateau reached by only 43 other players in league history. Giroux collected his 500th career AHL point nearly one year ago, on Dec. 19, 2009 against Rochester as a Hershey Bear. On Friday, Giroux was named by league President and CEO David Andrews one of two playing captains for the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross, Jan. 30-31 at Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. Giroux won back-to-back Calder Cups with Hershey the past 2 seasons.
DIVISIONAL DOINGS: The Barons are 8-3-0-1 against teams from the North Division and 8-7-1-2 vs. the West. OKC's 16 wins are evenly split between home (8-6-1-2) and road games (8-4-0-1). Last night's loss to Hamilton was OKC's first at the Cox Center against a North club after a pair of wins over Lake Erie, plus single wins against Toronto and Manitoba.
LIAM REDDOX, CHART TOPPER: Liam Reddox has scored the game's first goal 6 times this season to lead the AHL in "first goals." Reddox, the club leader in goals with 15, is tied for the third-most total goals behind former Hamilton Bulldog Max Pacioretty (17) and a trio of players with 16. Reddox is tied for the league lead in unassisted goals with 3 and is part of a 3-way tie for second in the AHL in shorthanded goals with 4. Reddox has more shorthanded goals by himself than 17 AHL teams.
PETRY A PLUS: Rookie defenseman Jeff Petry is +8 in the past 14 games. He's had a zero or plus rating in 12 of those past 14 contests. Petry is tied for fourth in the AHL in points by a defenseman with 20 and is seventh in rookie scoring. He had 3-game goal and 4-game point streaks snapped on Sunday at Milwaukee.
MCDONALD MATCHES CAREER BEST: Colin McDonald has equaled his career high goal total 30 games into the season. McDonald netted his 13th of the season on Saturday at Rockford, matching his career high set last year when he had 12 for Springfield and 1 for Edmonton.
