Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Despite a pair of goals by Jordan Hendry, the Norfolk Admirals (44-18-5-1) fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (31-27-1-5) 5-3 on Friday night at Scope.
The Sound Tigers out-shot the Admirals 16-5 in the first period, with one of their shots finding its target. Frans Nielsen put in a rebound at 15:01 of the opening frame to give Bridgeport a 1-0 lead.
Former Admiral Gregg Johnson doubled the Sound Tigers' lead in the second period. He scored a power play goal at 6:31 after he found a broken pass bouncing in the crease and swept it past Norfolk goaltender Corey Crawford.
Hendry's pair of goals midway through the second stanza knotted the score at 2-2. His first goal came from a booming slap shot from the left-side point that beat Bridgeport goalie Billy Thompson high at 9:15. His second goal was a tap-in at 12:34. Kris Versteeg sent a shot from the right circle that was stopped. Colin Fraser poked the rebound over Thompson's pads from the right edge of the crease, and the puck trickled near the goal line toward the opposite post. Hendry poked the puck into the net just as a Bridgeport penalty expired for a shorthanded tally.
Troy Brouwer gave Norfolk a 3-2 lead at 7:31 of the final frame. He sent a one-timer from the slot past Thompson to record a goal in his fifth straight game, tying a Norfolk franchise record.
However, the Sound Tigers evened the contest at 3-3 under five minutes later. Jeff Tambellini sent a shot from the right edge of the slot past a screened Crawford at 12:12.
Bridgeport then benefited from a late Norfolk penalty for the go-ahead goal. Eric Boguniecki's power play goal at 18:00 put the Sound Tigers ahead 4-3. Tambellini added an empty net goal with nine seconds left to cement a 5-3 Norfolk defeat.
Corey Crawford (35 shots, 31 saves) was strong in net for the Admirals but was saddled with the loss. Billy Thompson (33 shots, 30 saves) picked up the victory.
Norfolk was 0-4 on the power play. Bridgeport was 3-9.
