Sound Tigers come back, edge Admirals
March 16, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers came from behind and defeated the Norfolk Admirals 5-3 in a back-and-forth battle at Norfolk Scope on Friday night. Eric Boguniecki scored the go-ahead goal with two minutes remaining to cool off the Admirals, who were unbeaten in regulation in their previous six games, before 6,175 fans. Bridgeport improved to 31-27-1-5 and kept pace with Albany which also won on Friday and holds a one-point edge on the Sound Tigers in the race for the East Division's fourth and final playoff spot. Norfolk, first in the East Division - and all of the American Hockey League - dropped to 44-18-5-1.
After the Admirals fought back from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead in the third period, Boguniecki set up Jeff Tambellini for the game-tying tally at 12:12 of the third before giving the Sound Tigers a 4-3 lead with a power play goal - roofing a shot for his 22nd tally of the campaign. Bridgeport's Billy Thompson preserved the lead with some clutch goaltending and Tambellini iced the game with a power play empty-netter at the 19:51 mark, his team-leading 28th goal of the season.
Boguniecki, who also assisted Frans Nielsen's first period goal, has points in eight straight games, during which time he has compiled five goals and 12 assists.
Norfolk's Jordan Hendry, who scored twice in a span of 3:19 midway through the second period to tie the game, was whistled for a double minor penalty for spearing late in the third period, leading to the final two Bridgeport goals.
After Nielsen scored at 15:01 of the first period, Gregg Johnson buried a rebound during a power play at 6:31 of the second for a 2-0 Sound Tigers' advantage. Hendry scored at even strength at 9:15 of the second and on the power play at the 12:34 mark before Troy Brower netted his team-high 36th goal of the season for a 3-2 Norfolk lead at 7:31 of the third.
The Sound Tigers were 3-for-9 on the power play and held the Admirals scoreless on four power play attempts.
Bridgeport outshot Norfolk 36-34 (including 16-5 in the opening period). Thompson made 31 saves and his counterpart, Corey Crawford, stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced before being pulled for the extra attacker late in regulation.
