Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers earned their third straight victory Saturday night with a 3-1 win over the Springfield Falcons. Scooter Vaughan, Chris Langkow and Mike Halmo all picked up goals for the Sound Tigers, who defeated Springfield for the first time this season. Kenny Reiter was excellent and made 31 saves for the victory.
The Falcons scored the opening goal of the game exactly 11 minutes in on Jack Skille's third goal of the season. Falcons captain Ryan Craig took a shot from the right circle that Reiter stopped, but the rebound caromed off of Skille, who drove hard to the net, and past Reiter for the goal.
Less than two minutes later, however, the Sound Tigers evened the score at one. After the Sound Tigers won a defensive zone faceoff, Justin Johnson sent a long pass off the boards for Vaughan. Vaughan raced into the Falcons end and snapped a wrist shot past Mike McKenna for his second goal of the season. It came at the 12:53 mark and tied the score at one.
Neither team scored in the second period, but the Sound Tigers played well as Reiter stopped all 11 Falcons shots he faced. They also killed off penalties, including one which carried over from the first period and another that bled into the third.
Early in the third period, Langkow's second goal of the season gave the Sound Tigers the only lead they'd need for the victory. Riley Wetmore spun and shut from the right circle. McKenna made the save, but Langkow pounced on the rebound and fired it into the open net to give the Sound Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Later in the period, after the Falcons pulled McKenna, Halmo found the puck on his stick near his own blue line and fired it the length of the ice for the empty-net goal. The Sound Tigers return home to face the Syracuse Crunch Sunday evening at 5:00.
