Capitals Recall Wellman from Hershey and Re-Assign Schmidt to Hershey

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals have recalled center Casey Wellman from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and re-assigned defenseman Nate Schmidt to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Wellman, 26, has appeared in 37 games for the Bears this season, registering 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) and six penalty minutes. The 6'0", 183-pound center scored two goals on Friday against Syracuse and ranks second among Hershey skaters in goals (12) and fourth on the team in points (23). In 206 career AHL games, Wellman has recorded 158 points (65 goals, 93 assists) and 69 penalty minutes. The Brentwood, California, native made his Capitals debut on Dec. 17 at Philadelphia. Wellman has appeared in 42 career NHL games with Minnesota and Washington, registering 13 points (four goals, nine assists) and four penalty minutes.

Schmidt, 22, made his NHL debut against Colorado on Oct. 12 and has skated in 29 games with the Capitals this season, recording six points (two goals, four assists), six penalty minutes and a plus-four rating. The St. Cloud, Minn., native registered his first NHL point with an assist at Calgary on Oct. 26 and scored his first NHL goal on Dec. 7 against Nashville. The 6'0", 198-pound defenseman has appeared in 16 games with Hershey this season, recording seven points (1g, 6a) and six penalty minutes. In 24 career AHL games with the Bears, Schmidt has earned 11 points (two goals, nine assists) and eight penalty minutes.
