MANCHESTER, NH - Center Linden Vey scored with less than two seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Manchester Monarchs over the Portland Pirates, 3-2, on Los Angeles Kings Night at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night.

Manchester (28-12-2-4) leads the Atlantic Division with 62 points. Portland (15-16-2-7) is ranked fifth in the Atlantic Division with 39 points.

"I thought (our game) waned in a couple moments there in the third and allowed them back in the game, but I'd have to say we, pretty much, controlled most of the game," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "Give them credit, they're a good hockey team and they work hard, and their goalie did a heck of a job. That was a big one. With only a tick or two left on the clock, you know, we'll take it, it's two points, but these are the growing pains you go through."

With 1.8 seconds left to go in the overtime period, Vey averted the impending shootout by scoring the game-winner, his seventh of the season. Playing defense tonight, left wing Nick Deslauriers lobbed the puck in the air from the blueline. Vey caught the puck, set it down at the top of the left face-off circle, and skated across the top of the slot with it. With his head up and his stick poised for a shot, he found his shooting lane near the center of the right face-off circle and ended the game.

At 8:09 of the first period, right wing Sean Backman scored the first goal of the game. In the offensive zone, center Jordan Weal emerged with the puck from a battle in the right corner. He made faked like he was going behind the net with the puck, but quickly reversed, losing his defensive pressure in the process. With the space he gained, he passed the puck to Backman who was waiting near the bottom of the right face-off circle. Upon receiving the puck, Backman skated across the slot, drawing the puck to his backhand, and flung it in for his fifth goal of the season.

Left wing Tanner Pearson gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead at 11:23 of the second period. The Monarchs entered the offensive zone on a rush where neither a Pirates nor Monarchs player could effectively control the puck. Left wing Andy Andreoff was eventually able to fire a shot from the right face-off circle that Portland goaltender Louis Domingue blocked but allowed to rebound. Pearson, high in the slot, found the rebound and sent the puck over the shoulder of Domingue.

Center Andy Miele put the Pirates on the board at 9:22 of the third period to cut the lead to 2-1. During sustained offensive pressure from the Pirates, center Corey Trivino passed the puck to defenseman Brandon Gormley at the point. Gormley wristed a shot toward the net that Miele tipped past Monarchs goaltender J.F. Berube.

Just over two minutes later, at 9:22 of the third period, left wing Ethan Werek tied the game, 2-2. On the power play, Werek received the outlet pass from defenseman Mathieu Brisebois. Gaining speed even as he entered the Monarchs defensive zone, Werek wheeled around behind the net with the puck to tuck it in for a wrap-around goal, his third of the season.

Berube (17-12-2) earned his 17th win of the season stopping 26-of-28 shots. Domingue (6-3-2) took his third loss of the season, stopping 36 of the 39 shots he faced in the game.

Manchester was 0-for-4 on the power play. Portland went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
