Vey, Monarchs Stun Pirates in Overtime

Manchester, NH - The Pirates rallied in the third period to tie the game but Linden Vey's goal with 1.8 seconds left in overtime gave the Manchester Monarchs a 3-2 win over the Pirates. On LA Kings night in Manchester, and with the Monarchs wearing the infamous 1996 LA Kings 3rd jerseys, Manchester would open the scoring. Sean Backman took a feed from Jordan Weal and put it past Pirates starter Louis Domingue at 8:09 of the first to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Domingue stood strong for the rest of the first, stopping 14 of the 15 shots he saw, but the Pirates could not capitalize on their 4 shots on Jean-Francois Berube and trailed after 1.

Manchester extended their lead in the second. Tanner Pearson beats Domingue low and to the stick side with 8:37 left in the period, putting the Pirates at a 2 goal deficit. Andy Andreoff and Linden Vey had the assists on Pearson's 14th goal of the year. Manchester continued to pressure Domingue, but the first year goaltender stayed strong, stopping 13 of 14 shots in the period. The Pirates were able to apply more pressure to Berube in the second, sending 11 shots on net, but were unable to break through.

The Pirates finally broke through in the third period, scoring twice in a 2:13 span. Andy Miele struck first, beating Berube for his team leading 17th goal of the year at 9:22 of the third. Corey Trivino and Brandon Gormley added assists. After a penalty on Manchester's captain Andrew Campbell, Ethan Werek capitalized, putting the puck past Berube for the game tying power play goal. Werek's third of the year was assisted by Mathieu Brisebois. The score would remain 2-2 for the remainder of regulation, and the Pirates and Monarchs went to overtime for the third game this season.

The Pirates and Monarchs each had chances in overtime but the ice tilted towards the Pirates end as the five minute period ran down. With just 1.8 seconds left in the extra frame, Linden Vey beat Domingue with a knuckle puck over his blocker to give the Monarchs a 3-2 victory. The loss gives the Pirates a point in their second straight game, but extends their winless streak to 6 games with a record of 0-3-1-2. The Pirates also drop to 2-2-1-1 in VIP Cup action this year. Louis Domingue made 36 saves for the Pirates in the game, but sees his record drop to 6-3-2 on the year.

The Pirates travel to Springfield tomorrow for a matinée against the Eastern Conference leading Falcons. Puck drop is at 3 PM and the game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
