BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Philadelphia Phantoms 3-2 at home Saturday on the strength of a 29-save effort by goaltender Cody Rudkowsky.
Rudkowsky also helped open the scoring when he swept a loose puck to defenseman Allan Rourke who fed Robert Nilsson who in-turn peeled off once he crossed the Philadelphia line to send centering feed to Sean Bergenheim who zipped home his 15th goal of the season to make it 1-0 Sound Tigers 4:46 into the game.
The Sound Tigers doubled their lead to 2-0 when Bruno Gervais notched his 15th goal of the season, a power-play marker, 2:22 later off assists from Nilsson and Rob Collins. Gervais and Bergenheim are tied for the Sound Tigers' goal-scoring lead with 15 apiece while Collins upped his team-best assist and point totals to 29 and 41.
The Phantoms pulled starting netminder Jamie Storr, who allowed two goals on three shots in 7:08, in favor of Martin Houle after the Gervais tally.
Philadelphia cut the lead in half at 2-1 when Ryan Ready scored his fourth goal of the year, on the advantage, 2:59 into the middle frame off assists from Matt Ellison and John Slaney. The goal was the first scored by the Phantoms at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard this season after they were shutout in three previous visits.
It looked like the score would remain 2-1 through two periods until David Masse rifled home his eighth goal of the season off assists from Matt Koalska and Masi Marjamaki with 2.2 seconds left in the stanza to make it 3-1 Sound Tigers.
Philadelphia made it interesting when Marc Cavosie swept home a rebound for his second goal of the year with 6:53 left to play off assists from Charlie Cooke and Ellison. Philadelphia also called timeout and pulled Houle, who took the loss despite stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced, in favor of an extra attacker with 1:11 left to play but could not score.
Rudkowsky was the first star of the game, Nilsson the second and Ready the third. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 5 on the power play while the Phantoms were 1 for 4 and had a 31-20 shots on goal advantage.
The Sound Tigers will host the Syracuse Crunch this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. on Islanders 25th Anniversary puck giveaway night. They will visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this coming Friday, February 3rd at 7:05 p.m. and return to Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Providence Bruins next Saturday, February 4th at 7:05 p.m.
