Norfolk Admirals News Release

The Admirals got a third period goal to force overtime but fell in the shootout in Wilkes-Barre 4-3 on Saturday night.

The Admirals struck first for the seventh time in the past eight games with a power play goal 7:27 into the contest. Jason Morgan passed the puck from the corner to the right of Penguins' puckstopper Dany Sabourin to Milan Bartovic streaking in from the slot. Bartovic beat the defense to the puck and tapped the pass behind Sabourin to give Norfolk a 1-0 lead. Morgan helped the Admirals double their lead on another power play just under five minutes later. He skated the puck into the zone along the boards to the left of Sabourin. Quintin Laing skated parallel to Morgan along the slot and received the puck from Morgan at the faceoff dot. He sent a wrister that went into the net just inside the goal post to Sabourin's left at 12:11. The Admirals fired 16 pucks on net in the opening frame and Scott Reid stopped all six Wilkes-Barre shots he saw in his first Norfolk start as the visitors took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Penguins tied the game at 2-2 with goals in the first and last three minutes of the second stanza. Matt Hussey received the puck from Rico Fata at the high slot. Hussey snapped a shot top shelf for a power play goal at 2:48. Wilkes-Barre tied the game off a face-off with 2:21 remaining in the period. Erik Christensen sent a backhand shot from the bottom of the face-off circle to the right of Reid that was deflected past the goaltender by Jonathan Filewich. The Penguins out-shot the Admirals 15-8 in the middle frame, and the teams headed to the locker room tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Wilkes-Barre took the lead early in the third off a Ryan Stone snap shot from the left face-off dot at 3:23. Norfolk fought back and tied the game exactly six minutes later. Colin Fraser sent a shot from the right face-off dot that ricocheted to Matt Keith between the hashmarks. Keith sent the rebound into a nearly empty net to tie the game at 3-3 at 9:23. Neither team would find the back of the net in the remainder of the third or in the extra frame, as the game required a shootout to find a victor.

In the shootout, Mark Cullen's conversion did not prove to be enough as Christensen and Kenny Corupe made good on their chances and Wilkes-Barre won the shootout 2-1 and the game 4-3.

Scott Reid stopped 24 of 27 shots in his first Norfolk start, but ended up with the shootout loss. Dany Sabourin made 30 saves on 33 Admirals' shots and picked up the victory.
