SOTI Weekend Preview - Steelheads Climbing

December 8, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release

It was a successful weekend for the Steelheads as they took two thrilling victories on home ice. With these wins in hand, the Steelheads received an honourable mention on the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings this week. The team looks to keep climbing the Eastern Conference standings this week with three games in four nights.

The weekend starts with their first encounter with the Peterborough Petes on Thursday, before returning home to face the Niagara IceDogs on Friday and the surging Kingston Frontenacs in the Teddy Bear Toss game on Sunday afternoon.

On A Roll

After an exhilarating 3-2 win over Oshawa, the Steelheads have won 10 out of their last 13 games. In addition, the Steelheads have continued their success at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre this season with the league's third-best home record of 7-2-1-0 (.750 winning percentage). The Steelheads are currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a 13-6-1-1 record.

OHL's Top Goaltending Tandem

The Steelheads wouldn't be in the top four of the Eastern Conference without the remarkable goaltending duo of Roman Basran (8-5-0, 2.42 GAA, 2 SO) and Joe Ranger (5-1-1, 1.83 GAA, 2 SO). With Basran and Ranger as guardians of the net, the Steelheads have the best goals-against-average (GAA) in the OHL with a tremendous 2.25 GAA, and only second in the Canadian Hockey League behind the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL (2.09 GAA).

Off To Peterborough

For the first time this season, the Steelheads face off with one of the most historic franchises in the OHL - the Peterborough Petes - at the landmark Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The Petes are led by the duo of goal-scoring leader Tucker Robinson (15G, 19A) and assist leader Emmett Sproule (9G, 23A). In addition, Mason McTavish has picked up where he left off since he returned to the Petes on November 21, averaging 1.66 points per game in three games.

Peterborough is currently in eighth position of the Eastern Conference standings with a 8-11-1-0 record, but has four wins in the last ten games (4-5-1-0).

IceDogs Return To Mississauga

This Friday, the Niagara IceDogs return to the Paramount Fine Foods Centre, looking to gain ground in the Eastern Conference. Niagara has hit a slump in their season, losing eight of their last ten games (2-7-1-0) and currently sit last place in the Conference.

After losing the first game of the season series in Niagara on October 23, the Steelheads have reeled off two convincing wins against the IceDogs, outscoring the opposition 11-2. Netminders Roman Basran and Joe Ranger have done a terrific job in goal during the two-game span, with a combined 1.00 GAA and a save percentage of .938%.

Return Of The Frontenacs

The marquee matchup takes place on Sunday as the Steelheads host the Kingston Frontenacs for their 9th Annual Teddy Bear Toss game presented by Canadian Tire.

In this series, both teams are evenly matched, with the last three contests decided by one goal. In the previous meeting on November 28, the Steelheads put forth a solid effort, coming back from a 4-1 deficit in the second period, only to lose 5-4 to the Frontenacs on a late third-period goal.

The Steelheads defence looks to contain Frontenacs forward Lucas Edmonds, who has played a pivotal role in the team's ascent to the top of the Eastern Division, registering 22 points in the last ten games (5G, 17A) - a staggering 2.2 points-per-game average.

Winners of seven of the last ten matches, Kingston is currently in second place in the Eastern Conference with a 14-5-3-0 record, one point ahead of the Hamilton Bulldogs in the East Division and one point behind the North Bay Battalion for the top spot in the Conference.
