Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Eligio Sonoqui homered and drove in two runs on Thursday night, leading the Hot Rods past the West Michigan Whitecaps 2-1 at Bowling Green Ballpark. The first baseman's first long ball of the season proved to be the difference, evening the series at 1-1 heading into the finale on Friday night.
Sonoqui struck first against 2009 Detroit Tigers first round draft pick, Jacob Turner, in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner at third and two outs, Sonoqui bounced one off the pitcher's glove for an infield single, driving in Dustin Biell to give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead.
After West Michigan rallied for a run in the fourth, Sonoqui struck again in the sixth. Facing relief pitcher Luis Sanz, the slugging first baseman launched a home run over the right-center field wall to put the Hot Rods up to stay, 2-1. It was Sonoqui's second hit of the game, as he's settled into a groove during the first home stand of the season. Sonoqui has four hits in ten at-bats, recording his first three RBI of the season.
The Hot Rods bullpen made Sonoqui's home run stand up the rest of the way, as Alex Koronis (2-0) and Matt Stabelfeld each pitched a perfect inning. Kirby Yates followed them with two scoreless frames, striking out four, for his first save of 2010.
Shane Dyer earned a no-decision for the Hot Rods after throwing another five innings in his second start of the season. He gave up one run on four hits, walking three and adding three strikeouts.
The series is now knotted up at 1-1, leading to the rubber game to be played on a Family Fireworks Friday night presented by Clean Freaks, The Gables, Western Place, and Home-Towne Suites. The Hot Rods send RHP Wilking Rodriguez (0-0, 7.20) against West Michigan LHP Giovanni Soto (1-0, 1.80). First pitch is at 7:05 PM. You can follow the action with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst beginning at 6:50 PM on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
Gates open at 5:30 PM for Season Ticket holders and 6 PM for the general public. For tickets, call 270.901.2121 or visit www.bghotrods.com.
