Another One Run Loss For Winless Hawks
April 15, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Midland, MI - Another night with a lack of timely hitting cost the South Bend Silver Hawks on Thursday night as they fall to 0-8 on the season with a 2-1 loss to the Great Lakes Loons.
The Silver Hawks stranded 13 runners on base Thursday after stranding 12 in Wednesday's loss to Great Lakes. South Bend was also 0-for-4 Thursday with bases loaded, and is now 0-for-11 in those situations this season.
Both starting pitchers were dialed in early, taking turns putting up zeroes on the scoreboard. Great Lakes starter Matt Magill (ND) tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and struck out seven before turning it over to his bullpen. South Bend starter Eric Smith (ND) was even better. Smith went 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out six, before turning it over to the South Bend bullpen.
The Silver Hawks missed out on a golden opportunity against Allen Webster (WP, 2-0) in the top of the seventh. A leadoff single by Bobby Stone was followed by an Alberto Diaz single to put two runners on. Victor Estevez sacrificed them into scoring position and a walk to Errol Hollinger loaded the bases with one out. However, Webster retired the next two to end the threat and leave the bases loaded.
After holding the Silver Hawks in the top of the seventh, the Loons got to the South Bend bullpen in the bottom of the inning. Brian Budrow (LP, 0-1) allowed a one out single to Jerry Sands, and then fell behind Angelo Songco with a 2-0 count. Songco drove the next pitch over the wall in the left-center, a 392-foot blast for the 2-0 lead.
South Bend answered with a run in the top of the eighth to close within one. Walks to David Nick and Bobby Stone put two on with two outs, and Diaz picked up a RBI with a single to center to make it a 2-1 game.
The Silver Hawks threatened with a bases loaded situation in the ninth, but could not bring in the tying run. Errol Hollinger singled, but pinch runner David Narodowski was erased on a fielder's choice by Ender Inciarte. Luis Vasquez (SV, 1) was summoned from the bullpen, and immediately gave up a hit to Chris Owings and a walk to Bobby Borchering to load the bases. However, Vasquez settled down and struck out David Nick and Matt Davidson to end the threat and the game.
The Silver Hawks and Loons wrap up the three game series Friday evening at 6:05 PM Eastern Time at Dow Diamond. Silver Hawks RHP Chase Anderson (0-1, 4.15 ERA) will start against Great Lakes RHP Will Savage (0-0, 2.70 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
