Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA -The Peoria Chiefs lost their second straight contest in Cedar Rapids 8-6 on Thursday night after their late-inning rally fell short with the tying runs on base in the eighth and ninth innings. The loss drops the Chiefs to 3-5 on the season with one game remaining on the season-opening nine-game roadtrip.
Trailing 8-2 the Chiefs rallied in the top of the eighth to get back into the game but ultimately fell short. With one out in the eighth, Jesus Morelli drew a walk from reliever CJ Bressoud and with two down Jesus Valdez was hit in the hip. Matt Cerda made it 8-3 with a single to left-center, and Greg Rohan doubled down the left-field line to score two more. Justin Bour cut the deficit to 8-6 with a double to right, and Mario Mercedes singled to put runners on the corners with two down. Jon Bachanov relieved Bressoud and George Matheus was out on a bang-bang play at first base on a grounder hit to second to end the inning.
After Jordan Latham got through the bottom of the eighth unscathed the Chiefs went back to work against Bachanov in the ninth. Alvaro Ramirez led off with a single to left and Richard Joes was called upon to pinch-hit for Morelli. Jones singled sharply to right but Ramirez was thrown out on a close play at third base for the first out. With Jones at second, Hak-Ju Lee reached on a bunt single to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. But Valdez grounded into a game-ending 4-3 double play to give the Kernels an 8-6 win.
The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead against Patrick Corbin in the top of the first. Lee reached on an infield single and moved to second when Valdez was hit by a pitch. With two on and one out, Rohan put the Chiefs up 1-0 with a RBI groundout to second and Bour singled home Cerda for a 2-0 lead.
Cedar Rapids tied the game thanks to the first of four Chiefs errors in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Eric Oliver hit a tailor-made double play ball to shortstop. Lee's flip to second went into right field allowing two runs to score, tying the game.
The Kernels took the lead for good in the fifth against Chiefs reliever Tim Clubb. With one out Matt Long singled, stole second and moved to third on a long flyout. With Clubb working out of the windup, Long broke for home and slid in under Mercedes' tag for a rare straight steal of home and a 3-2 Kernels lead. Carlos Ramirez followed with a double and scored on a double by Luis Jimenez. The third straight double of the inning by Randal Grichuk made it 5-2 Cedar Rapids.
Cedar Rapids kept punishing the Chiefs bullpen in the seventh, aided by two more Chiefs errors. With runners on the corners a wild pitch by Ronny Morla scored the first run of the inning and two errors put runners in scoring position. Oliver doubled home Grichuk for a 7-2 lead and Kevin Ramos delivered a sac fly to make it 8-2.
Chiefs' starter Jonathan Nagel allowed one earned run on three hits over four innings while walking three for a no-decision. Clubb (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs on four hits in one inning. Morla allowed three more runs on three hits and two walks in two innings and Latham threw a shutout inning with a strikeout.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Greg Rohan (DH) - Rohan went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored. He put the Chiefs up 1-0 with a rbi groundout in the first and doubled leading off the seventh. He cut the deficit to 8-5 with a two-run double in the eighth for his team-leading 7th RBI.
