Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, Ky. - Both pitching staffs came out strong, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) rolled to 3-1 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) on Tuesday night behind Jake Faria, Luis Cabrera, and Colton Reavis. Faria worked six innings before giving way to Cabrera and Reavis who held the lead in check.

Faria (5-4) scattered seven hits over his six frames, and allowed just one run while not walking a batter. He struck out seven, just two shy of his season-high, and lowered his earned run average to 3.53. Cabrera threw two scoreless inning and used a double play to get out of trouble in the eighth. Reavis slammed the door in the ninth for his fifth save of the season, and he induced a double play of his own to end the ballgame.

Bowling Green's staff received all the runs they would need in the bottom of the second. Oscar Hernandez and Juniel Querecuto led off with back-to-back singles, and Pat Blair laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to third base that advanced both into scoring position. Darryl George then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hernandez, and James Harris hit a sharp single to first base that advanced home Querecuto. The Hot Rods led 2-0 after two innings of play.

Javier Betancourt and the Whitecaps cut the advantage in half in the very next inning as Betancourt hit a one-out home run just over the left-field fence into the Hot Rods' bullpen. While it did provide some temporary momentum for West Michigan, it would be their only slice of scoring on the night.

An insurance run crossed for the Hot Rods in the bottom of the eighth. Querecuto recorded his second hit of the night with one out, and he displayed great base running when he scored from first base on a ball hit by Blair that went into the foul area down the left-field line. The ball barely stayed fair, but Blair's double extended the lead to 3-1.

Kevin Ziomek (7-6) pitched well enough to win for the Whitecaps but he took the loss. The left-hander allowed two runs on seven hits before being removed to start the sixth inning.

The win by Faria gives him sole possession of the team lead with five, and Reavis' fifth save also is the most by any Hot Rod this season.

The Hot Rods go for two wins in a row on Wednesday night, first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT on a Meijer Wednesday, meaning half-price tickets to nearly every area of Bowling Green Ballpark.
