PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped their series-opening game to the Clinton LumberKings 4-2 on Tuesday night despite a quality start from Arturo Reyes, the team's fourth in a row. The Chiefs are 11-7 in the second half and 48-39 overall.
The LumberKings began the scoring with two runs in the second inning against Reyes. Isaiah Yates drove a one-out pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run and a 1-0 Clinton lead. With two outs, Luis Caballero singled, stole second and went to third on a pickoff-attempt throwing error by Reyes. Caballero scored on Aaron Barbosa's single to right.
The Chiefs cut the deficit in half with an unearned run in the seventh against LumberKings starter Eddie Campbell. Justin Ringo led off with a pop fly on the infield that first baseman Justin Seager couldn't make the catch on and Ringo ended up at second on the two-base error. Carson Kelly followed with a double in the right-center field gap to make the score 2-1 Clinton, but Campbell and reliever Rafael Pineda combined to retire the next three to end the inning.
Clinton got a pair of insurance runs in the ninth against Robert Stock. Brett Thomas walked and Yates singled to begin the inning. Lonnie Kauppila laid down a sacrifice bunt but the Chiefs couldn't get an out and the bases were loaded. Caballero hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-1 LumberKings lead as all three runners advanced. After Stock intentionally walked Barbosa, Jack Reinheimer hit a sac fly to center to make the score 4-1 LumberKings.
Peoria only got one run back in the bottom of the ninth against Pineda. CJ McElroy Jr. led off with a single and with one out, Kelly singled him to third. Juan Herrera hit a high chopper to third for a single to plate McElroy and make the score 4-2 Clinton. Nick Valenza replaced Pineda and Steve Bean hit a hard ground ball that Reinheimer made a diving play on at short to start a game-ending double play.
Reyes (5-5) pitched the first six innings allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in taking the loss. Kevin Herget tossed two scoreless innings on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Stock worked the ninth inning and gave up two runs on one hit with two walks and a strikeout.
