EASTLAKE, OH - Matt Dean hit a grand slam and Derrick Loveless added a two-run homer in a six-run seventh inning as the Lansing Lugnuts (10-8, 42-45) sank the Lake County Captains (9-8, 36-52), 12-4, on Tuesday night at Classic Park.
After pitching dominated the first four frames, the Lugnuts scored 10 unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a 10-1 lead over the Captains.
RBI singles by Dawel Lugo and David Harris gave Lansing a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, and the Lugnuts added a pair in the sixth on a Lugo sacrifice fly and a throwing error against Lake County right fielder Jorge Martinez.
After the first three Lugnuts reached to start the seventh, Dean hit a grand slam off of Lake County starter Mitch Brown (Loss, 2-7) for his sixth home run of the year to give the Lugnuts a 8-1 lead.
Two batters later, Loveless crushed his fourth home run of the season, a two-run home run to right-center field.
In the ninth, Lugo capped off his 3-for-4, four-RBI night with a his second double of the night to plate a pair of runs.
Making his first appearance since April 22, reliever Jimmy Cordero (Win, 2-1) pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning for the Lugnuts.
Lansing starter Brad Allen allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts in his 4.0 innings.
Lansing and Lake County continue the three-game series on Wednesday morning at Classic Park. Right-hander Jeremy Gabryszwski (6-2, 3.82) will start on the mound for the Lugnuts, while Caleb Hamrick (2-4, 6.63) will pitch for the Captains.
