Solar Bears Rally to Beat Cyclones, 4-2

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Forwards Zach Harrison and David Rutherford scored goals just 13 seconds apart in the third period to help lift the Orlando Solar Bears (7-4-0-1) past the Cincinnati Cyclones (7-2-0-0) by a 4-2 final score in front of 2,298 at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night.

Orlando goaltender John Curry (W, 37 saves, 5-1-0-0), who was recently named the ECHL's Goalie of the Week, stood strong in net, turning aside 37 of 39 shots faced. Despite the Cyclones outshooting the Solar Bears, 39-26, and goalie Rob Madore (L, 22 saves, 6-2-0-0) stopping 22 of Orlando's 26 shots, the Cyclones could not muster a late-game comeback

The Solar Bears came out strong to start the first period, killing an early penalty and registering six shots on goal in the first ten minutes. However, David MacDonald, who was named Cyclones team captain this afternoon, blasted a shot from the top of the right circle that found its way past Curry at 16:42, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 advantage. Later in the frame, it appeared that Taylor Aronson stuffed a Wade Megan backhand shot between the pipes, but the goal was waived off due to incidental contact and the Cyclones carried their one-goal lead into the first intermission.

After an impressive defensive display from both teams, the Solar Bears evened the score late in the second stanza when defenseman Zachary Yuen scored his first professional goal on a wrister from the blue line at 14:41.

The score remained deadlocked early in the third frame until the Cyclones' leading scorer, Wade Megan, buried his ninth goal of the season on a rebound at 5:44. However, Cincinnati's lead was short-lived as Zach Harrison scored his fifth goal of the year at 7:56. Thirteen seconds later, David Rutherford scored his fourth goal of 2013-14, giving the Solar Bears their first and final lead of the night. With 50 seconds remaining, forward Tyler Murovich added an empty-net tally, securing the 4-2 win for the visiting team.

"It's an honor to wear it," said MacDonald, who added the team 'C' to his sweater this afternoon. "Especially in Cincinnati, it's pretty special. We didn't get the outcome we wanted tonight, but hopefully we can work on that for the next game."

"David MacDonald is a guy who comes out every game and plays 110 percent and that's a big reason he has the 'C' on his chest," said Assistant Coach Matt Macdonald. "I think that for him tonight, whether he had the letter on his chest or not, he would have done the same move and done the same play and that's a big reason that he's such a leader."

The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank Arena this Friday when they welcome in the Greenville Road Warriors on Star Wars Night at 7:30pm.
