Kabanov Recalled by Bridgeport, Two Assigned

November 13, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release

Stockton, Calif. - Thunder Head Coach Rich Kromm has announced that forward Kirill Kabanov has been called up to the AHL by the Thunder's affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Kabanov was assigned to the Thunder by Bridgeport before the start of the season on October 8th.

The 21-year-old Moscow, Russia native started the season in Bridgeport where he scored a goal in the Sound Tigers season-opener before being sent down to Stockton after two games. Kabanov spent his first pro season with the Sound Tigers last year after being assigned to the team by the New York Islanders who drafted him in the 3rd round back in 2010. In 2012-13 he had 9 points in 32 games with Bridgeport while missing time with a severe wrist injury.

With the Thunder, Kabanov was a point-per-game player registering 8 points in 8 contests. He leaves the team tied for second for most points and tied for the team lead in goals with 4 tallies. The 6-3, 195-pound forward showcased both his skills, with a dazzling goal against the Utah Grizzlies, and his tenacity, registering a "Gordie Howe hat trick" with a goal, assist and fight in the Thunder's season-opener.

In his place, the Sound Tigers have assigned forwards Jason Clark and Greg Miller. Clark, like Kabanov, was selected by the Islanders in the 3rd round of the 2010 NHL draft. He spent two years at the University of Wisconsin before signing an entry-level contract with the Islanders before the 2012-13 season. In his first pro season he split time between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. He has 1 assist in 11 games with Bridgeport this season.

Miller is a graduate from Cornell University where he played four years, posting a career-high 33 points in 33 games with the Big Red in his senior season. Miller, a Toronto native, played for the same junior team that Brayden Irwin played for, the St. Michael's Buzzers of the OPJHL. So far in his first pro campaign Miller has appeared in 9 games for the Sound Tigers but is still looking for his first professional point.

The Thunder continues its busy November with a road game against the Bakersfield Condors on Thursday morning. It's a 10:30 a.m. start at Rabobank Arena, but even with the early puck drop, the Thunder's "home away from home", the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel will still be showing the game for Thunder fans and offering food specials. Fans will be able to get breakfast burritos at half price from the hotel's Delta Bistro. The Thunder returns home on Friday to face the Ontario Reign at 7:30 p.m. As part of the "Sharing & Caring" event, the team will be collecting gently used and new winter coats, blankets, and new packs of socks from fans to be handed out to people in need. Fans that donate will receive a $5 off voucher good for any seating location.
