
Smokies Take Game Five and Series

In the rubber game of this five-game set Monday night, Tennessee used two home runs to defeat the M-Braves and hand Mississippi only its second series loss of the year. The Smokies took the early lead 3-0, but the M-Braves came back to cut the lead to one at 4-3, but they couldn't close the gap as Tennessee, took game five, 4-3.
Tennessee jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second when Issmael Salas blasted his third homer of the year into the Braves bullpen in left field.
The Braves got on the board in the third when, with two outs, Carl Loadenthal singled, stole second, and came in to score on a single by Brent Lillibridge.
The Smokies pushed the lead to 4-1 in the fourth when Josh Kroeger belted his third homer of the year out to right.
Mississippi clawed back in the fifth when Van Pope drew a lead-off walk and scored on a wild pitch. The M-Braves would load the bases, but couldn't get anything more out of the inning.
Clint Sammons led off the ninth with a double to right and he moved to third on an infield single by Carl Loadenthal. Sammons came in to score on an infield single by Lillibridge to cut the lead to 4-3, but Brandon Jones struck out to end the game.
Kelvin Villa gave up four runs on four hits through six innings and left the game trailing 4-2. Jose Ascanio threw two scoreless innings and Joey Devine threw a scoreless ninth to finish out the game.
Sean Gallagher gave up two runs on four hits through five innings and left the game with a 4-2 lead. He improved to 6-2 on the year. Greg Reinhard gave up one hit in one scoreless inning. Jerry Blevins threw one scoreless inning. James Henderson threw a scoreless eighth and Geoff Jones threw a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.
The M-Braves have tomorrow off before hosting division-rival Montgomery in a five-game set. The first game of that series is set for Wednesday night at 7:05. Mississippi is scheduled to send RHP Lance Cormier to the hill in his second rehab outing. Montgomery is scheduled to go with lefty Chris Seddon.
Braves Bites:
Tonight's loss gave the Braves only their second series loss of the year ... In both, they won the first two games of the series then lost the next three.
The 1 and 2 batters in the M-Braves lineup combined to go 6-9 while the 3, 4, and 5 batters combined to go 2-12.
