Trevor Smith scored his first professional hat-trick tonight to help the Sound Tigers to a 6-1 win over the Lowell Devils. Mike Morrison stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced tonight to improve his perfect record against the Devils to 4-0. The victory keeps the team's playoff hopes alive after the Hershey Bears defeated the Philadelphia Phantoms tonight by the score of 4-2.
Smith opened the scoring in the first period when he banged home his 17th tally of the season. Blake Comeau controlled the puck in the left corner before throwing a shot towards the net. The puck banked off a body in front to Smith in the slot where he fired the puck past Devils' starting net-minder Dave Caruso for the 1-0 lead.
The second period would belong to Jeff Tambellini as he helped the Sound Tigers deposit two goals past Caruso. At the 6:08 mark of the frame, Tambellini blasted his 37th goal of the season under Caruso, while the Sound Tigers were on the man-advantage. Ben Walter and captain Mark Wotton had the assists on the Tambellini's goal, tying him with Pascal Pelletier of the Providence Bruins for the league lead. With about three minutes remaining in the period, Tambellini set up the Sound Tigers' third goal of the game. Walter sent a pass to Tambellini in the left corner where he snapped a pass to Tim Jackman, parked at the top of the crease. Jackman redirected the puck past Caruso's blocker for his 12th tally of the season making the score 3-0 heading into the third period.
The Sound Tigers would pull away in the final frame, scoring three goals about three minutes apart from each other. Smith scored his second of the game when he snapped a Comeau feed from the top of the slot over the glove of Caruso for the 4-0 lead. Wotton also had an assist on Smith 18th marker of the season. At the half-way mark of the period, Comeau did almost a complete circle around Lowell's zone and then hit Jackman with a pass that he one-timed through Caruso for the 5-0 lead. Wotton collected his third helper on Jackman's second goal of the game and 13th of the season. Smith would complete his hat-trick on a pretty deflection from a point shot by defenseman Scott Ford. Jackman passed the puck to Ford at the right point where the 6'3, 225 pound defenseman walked in and sent a low shot on net. Smith was able to get his stick on the shot changing the puck's direction through Caruso for the 6-0 lead.
Mike Morrison started in goal for the Sound Tigers and held Lowell off the board until the Ryan Murphy wristed a shot from the left circle over his glove breaking his shutout bid with about two minutes to play. Rosario Ruggeri and Trevor Kell had the assists on Murphy's eighth goal of the season. Caruso finished the game with 16 saves for the Devils who out-shot the Sound Tigers 28-22. The Sound Tigers were 2-for-3 on the power-play while going 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill.
Tomorrow the Sound Tigers will begin a home-and-home series with the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7 p.m. from the XL Center. On Sunday the two teams will close out the regular season when Hartford pays their final visit to Bridgeport, face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
