Peoria Rivermen News Release
Jeremy Smith stopped all 24 Rivermen shots he faced Saturday night, as the Milwaukee Admirals defeated the Peoria Rivermen 3-0 in front of 7,304 fans at Carver Arena. It was the first time the Rivermen were shutout at home since Feb. 28, 2010, also against the Milwaukee Admirals. The Rivermen (31-20-2-3, 67 pts.) dropped to fifth place in the Western Division and now trail the Admirals (31-14-2-7, 71 pts.) by four points.
Ryan Reaves got the crowd on their feet right off the opening face-off by dropping the gloves and exchanging heavy right hands with Kelsey Wilson. Other than that, the Admirals controlled the game.
Milwaukee first scored at 7:18 of the first period on Wilson's seventh of the year. Jake Allen got most of Teemu Laakso's slap-shot from the point, but not enough as the puck trickled through Allen's legs and was loose in the crease for Wilson to tap in. Andreas Thuresson picked up the second assist on the goal.
Roughly three minutes later, Blake Geoffrion scored his 11th of the year on the Admirals first power play of the game. Jonathon Blum set up Roman Josi with a one-timer from the middle of the ice at the blue line and while the shot was on its way Geoffrion managed to get a stick on the puck and tip it by Allen.
Neither team scored in the second period and the final tally did not come until 17:42 of the final frame. Gabriel Bourque wristed a shot from the bottom of the left circle over the blocker of Allen. It was Bourque's ninth of the year and was assisted by Chris Mueller and Brett Palin.
The Rivermen were unable to convert on each of their three power-plays while the Admirals went 1-for-3. The Rivermen outshot the Milwaukee 24-23 in the game.
Allen stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced in recording the loss while T.J. Hensick saw his season-long 11-game point-streak come to an end.
The Rivermen will face-off against the Griffins in Grand Rapids tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. The game can be heard locally on 96.5 ESPN in Peoria or online at www.rivermen.net.
