Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Mark Barberio brought a crowd of 7,737 fans at Norfolk Scope Arena to their feet by tying the game with 3.3 seconds remaining in regulation. However, the Norfolk Admirals (28-16-8-4) fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (42-15-0-0) in a shootout, 2-1, on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. Next up for the Admirals is a matchup on Friday night against the Charlotte Checkers at Scope - including an appearance by the Stanley Cup.
Dustin Tokarski stopped 34 of 35 shots for the Admirals but was saddled with the shootout setback.
Neither team found the back of the net through the first two periods of play, as Norfolk was denied on 12 shots and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on 18 shots through 40 minutes.
The Penguins opened scoring with 5:17 remaining in regulation, as Ben Street put the rebound of a Corey Potter shot past Tokarski.
Norfolk tied the game in the waning seconds of regulation with Tokarski on the bench in favor for the extra attacker. Mike Vernace made a sliding block to prevent the puck from being cleared out of the attacking zone. Barberio found the loose puck in the high slot and wired a wrist shot through a screen and past Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Brad Thiessen to tie the game at 1-1 with his sixth goal of the season.
Both teams had two shots in overtime but were unable to net the game-winner.
Keven Veilleux and Andrew Hutchinson scored in the shootout for the Penguins while Norfolk was denied by Thiessen on all four of their attempts to give the visitors the win.
Dustin Tokarski (35 shots, 34 saves) was saddled with the loss. Brad Thiessen (27 shots, 26 saves) earned the victory.
Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-3.
The Admirals will battle the Charlotte Checkers at Scope for the final time in the 2010-11 regular season on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Stanley Cup will be in attendance for the game for fans to see and take photos with.
