
P-Bruins Defeat Whale in Shootout 5-4

East Hartford, CT - The Providence Bruins defeated the Connecticut Whale 5-4 Saturday evening in a shootout at Rentschler Field. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Maxime Sauve, Jordan Smotherman, Jeremy Reich and Jamie Arniel and in the shootout from Sauve. Providence returns to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday at 4:05 p.m. for Silly Band Night against the Worcester Sharks.
The Whale took a 1-0 lead at the 11:13 mark of the opening period. Tim Kennedy tallied his 12th goal of the season. The goal was unassisted. Connecticut made it 2-0 at the 19:38 mark. Jyri Niemi netted his second goal of the season, while Devin DiDiomete and Kelsey Tessier picked up the assists. The Whale led 2-0 going into the first intermission.
Providence pulled within a goal at the 1:21 mark of the second period. Antoine Roussel carried the puck into the zone and passed it to Arniel along the boards. He shot the puck towards the net, where it was tipped in by Sauve for his 14th goal of the season. The P-Bruins tied the game at two at the 6:25 mark. Roussel worked the puck around the boards for Zach Hamill, who tossed it in front of the net. Smotherman found it to score his seventh goal of the season. The P-Bruins took their first lead of the game at the 9:42 mark, while on the power play. Arniel grabbed the puck off of a Whale turnover and found Reich in front of the net, who scored his 12th goal of the season. Connecticut tied the game at three at the 12:15 mark, while on the power play. Jeremy Williams scored his 25th goal of the season with Wade Redden and Kennedy getting the assists. The Whale retook the lead at the 13:14 mark. Jared Nightingale tallied his second goal of the season, while Ryan Garlock and Evgeny Grachev grabbed the assists. Connecticut led 4-3 going into the second intermission.
The P-Bruins tied the game at four at the 13:52 mark of the third period. David Ling brought the puck into the zone and passed it off to Sauve. He found Arniel cutting towards the net who scored his 16th goal of the season. The game went into overtime tied at four.
After a scoreless overtime, Sauve tallied the lone goal in the shootout, in the fourth round, to give the P-Bruins the 5-4 victory.
Michael Hutchinson stopped 28 of 32 shots in regulation and all five shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Dov Grumet-Morris made 28 saves in regulation and three saves in the shootout for the Whale. The P-Bruins were 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
