MANCHESTER, NH - Bud Holloway collected a goal and two assists to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 5-4 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 7,669 at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
Ray Kaunisto, Dwight King, Richard Clune and Andrew Campbell netted the other Monarchs goals while Justin Azevedo collected two assists. Manchester improved to 34-17-2-5 with the win and expanded their lead over the Pirates for first place in the Atlantic Division to three points.
Luke Adam paced the Pirates with two goals while Jacob Lagace and T.J. Brennan netted the others. Marc-Andre Gragnani and Mark Mancari also collected two assists each as Portland slipped to 33-16-4-2 on the season.
The Monarchs jumped out quickly in this one with goals by Kaunisto and King in the opening four minutes to grab a 2-0 lead. Manchester added two more goals with the teams playing four-on-four (by Campbell and Holloway) in a span of 35 seconds to surge back to a 5-3 lead after two. Brennan scored in the final minute of the third to make it close.
The Monarchs out shot the Pirates 33-27 in the game as Jhonas Enroth took the loss in relief after replacing started David Leggio with 6:11 remaining in the second and the Monarchs leading 4-3.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Holloway, 2. Azevedo and 3. Adam.
