Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Chris Hawkins swatted a three-run homer amid a six-run 4th inning and Dwight Smith, Jr. went 4-for-4 with a walk, driving the Lansing Lugnuts to a 10-2 rout of the Michigan State Spartans before a Cooley Law School Stadium crowd of 11,619 in the seventh annual Crosstown Showdown presented by Auto-Owners Insurance.
"The result tonight isn't as important as the experience," Michigan State head coach Jake Boss said. "It's something they look forward to every year. Another great crowd and the Lugnuts are a first-class organization. It's something they will remember for a long time."
Lansing reliever Chase DeJong earned the win, striking out four batters in two scoreless innings, while the loss fell on MSU starter Cody Huge.
The Lugnuts jumped on Huge in the first inning, scoring the first two runs in the seven-inning contest. Carlos Ramirez had an RBI single and Chris Hawkins had a sacrifice fly for Lansing.
Lansing added one in the third and six more runs in the fourth inning to lengthen its lead. The Lugnuts batted 12 batters in the fourth, climaxed by Hawkins' three-run blast to Larch Street in right.
Lugs starter Kramer Champlin fired a perfect first inning, relieved by DeJong for the second and third frames, with Alberto Tirado (2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K) working the fourth and fifth innings, Adonys Cardona (2 H, 2 K) taking care of the sixth, and infielder-turned-pitcher Justin Jackson firing a 1-2-3 seventh.
The Lugnuts next open a six-game, five-day homestand against Wisconsin and Beloit, with the Lugs and Timber Rattlers playing a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday doubleheader to open a three-game series. Game 1 will start at 5:05 p.m.; the evening features $1 beer specials.
Lansing Lugnuts tickets are available for purchase at lansinglugnuts.com and by calling 517-485-4500, and Lugnuts text alerts are easily accessed by texting LUGNUTS to 313131.
